is an iconic property in Saint-Emilion. Since acquiring the château in 2008, the Castel family has devoted time and resources to the project, shaping a new history and a new ambition. For over 10 years, the focus has been on listening to and understanding the terroir in order to build a winemaking business based on a desire for sustainable excellence.
The design and construction of the winery, inaugurated in 2020, are the vehicle for achieving this vision of enhancing the value of the property and its terroir.
21 ha
Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Siliceous clay soil with clay subsoil, veins of blue clay
La Croix de Montlabert is the estate's second wine. It hails from an 8-hectare plot of vines located in the commune of Saint Christophe des Bardes, acquired in 2017. This terroir has a clay and silt soil and subsoil that is particularly conducive to the expression of the Cabernet Franc.
" Since acquiring the property in 2008, we have been listening to and building on our understanding of the vineyard. We have, for example, optimised our water management through drainage work, replanted some of our plots and incresed planting density, and changed some of our growing methods, banning the use of chemical fertilisers and weed killers. In 2011 we obtained the Terra Vitis certification, testifying to our commitment to sustainiblity and responsible winegrowing. The design of the new winery was intended as an extension of the work carried out in the vineyard. Thanks to this facility, we can express our terroir with greater precision."
