Cru la Maqueline

spans 36 hectares to the south of Margaux, on the banks of the Gironde estuary.

The use of the term ‘Cru’ is unusual as it can be used to denote both the estate and the wine it produces. In 2006, when Philippe and Catherine Castel acquired the property, which dates back to 1892, they decided against a name change. Cru la Maqueline, with its distinctive ranch-style architecture, is also home to the elaborate stables which house the family's collection of competitive reining horses. The wine produced here is as unique as the property itself – New World in style, with a majority Merlot blend.

Le Crémant de Bordeaux

de Cru La Maqueline

Although the "Crémant de Bordeaux" appellation is relatively recent, the history of sparkling wines in the Bordeaux region is centuries-old. It was at Cru la Maqueline, in 1892, that Nathaniel Johnston began his first experiments in the Champagnisation of Bordeaux wines. Over 120 years later, Castel Châteaux & Grands Crus is bringing this time-honoured tradition back to life, launching a undosed Crémant de Bordeaux, aged in bottles on slats for 24 months. The blend is majority Merlot with some additional Petit Verdot. With quality in mind, the fermentation is deliberately slow, using yeasts selected by the Champagne Oenology Institute for use by some of the region's most reputable houses.

La Maqueline

With Merlot dominating the blend, Cru la Maqueline is a lively, modern, New World style wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot make up the rest of the blend, bringing elegance and complexity. Ripe, jammy dark fruit notes are joined by softer aromas of toasted nuts and Moka. This powerful, balanced wine has a silky, smooth mouthfeel.

" My two main passions in life are wine and horse riding. When I discovered Cru la Maqueline in 2006, I was instantly convinced. The large fields that surround the property are perfect both for raising horses and growing vines. That’s why I wanted to invest, and that’s why I wanted to live there. "
